Your forties are great, kiddies. You stop caring about so much stupid stuff, but you start caring about a lot of serious stuff more. So it feels good to care less about the jean size and more about the state of the union.
A fun time for me is a bottle of wine and a conversation comprised entirely of movie dialogue. But of course, one can't go on like that all night. Good friends, food, a fertile mind, and a well-earned arsenal of stories and experiences should get things progressing nicely.
On some days, I'm like, "When I think about my life, all I see is a long, dark highway, filled with endless toll booths, and no exits." Other days, I'm more like, "I can't believe it. Right here in our own city. Right here in St. Louis!"
Finally, I need to laugh. Hard. As a good friend of mine says, life's too long.
My Ideal Person:
A friend would describe an annoying phrase his ex would often use: "I want to do something fun!" It's trite and it nearly drove him crazy, but I understand the sentiment. Oh I can be dead serious. I will gleefully sit through five hours of heavy German opera, but I need lots of laughing and absurdity. So at intermission, I like a companion who is amused by my imagining the soprano making her entrance in the next act by being shot from a cannon from the balcony.
I'm a country boy transplanted to the city seventeen years ago, so I'm always excited by the city. I love it when other people are enthusiastic too. I appreciate sophistication, but someone too cool for school bums me out. It's great if you love the latest nerdy exhibit at The Museum of Science and Industry, but it's really great if you get psyched about the scale model of The Titanic built completely out of matchsticks. And it's great when folks really love to go to the movies, just as an activity, without much preconceptions or prejudices about what we should see. Let's lighten things up tonight and skip that Iranian feature at Facets and go see that Harold and Kumar sequel instead.
So, I guess I'm looking for a thoughtful and serious mind, sure. But can't we have fun?
